Introduction
Outside Looking In is looking for multiple professional dance choreographers to add to our roster for the upcoming 2022-2023 season. They are required to travel to Indigenous communities across Canada and choreograph high-energy dance routines for Indigenous youth from Grades 7-12. As an OLI Choreographer, you will be part of an inclusive organization that provides art education and support services for Indigenous youth across Canada from fly-in reserves and urban centers.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The OLI Choreographer is one of the main people that our youth connects with the most. It is important that this individual is aware that they are coming into these communities to teach more than dance. OLI choreographers are also role models, mentors and OLI ambassador that represents who and what OLI is all about. OLI Choreographers are responsible to put together a 2-3 minute high-energy routine for a community that they will be paired with to showcase at the OLI Annual Show (which takes place in May annually).
REMOTE MODEL
- Choreographers will travel to fly-in or remote communities 4-10 times during September-June. Each trip lasts for about 3-5 days.
- Flights, accommodations and per diems all included
URBAN MODEL
- Choreographers will travel to urban communities 2-3 times per week during September-June, if community is within 2-3 hours away from where they reside. Each class will be between 1.5-2 hours
- Mileage can be reimbursed if you are using your own vehicle
- Transportation, accommodation and per diem can be included, only if necessary.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Choreograph and teach 2-3 minute high-energy and age-appropriate routines (must be completed by end of March 2023)
- Include a 10-15 minute warmup/fitness session at the beginning of each class and a 5-10 minute cooldown at the end of each class
- Manage and run community rehearsals and ensure participants are following dance rehearsal etiquette (ie. hair tied back, no extra baggy clothes, indoor shoes on (ideally), no gum chewing etc.)
- Film tutorial videos of the routine and submit/post it on private Facebook community page after each trip
- Finalize costumes, song selections and submit final mix no later than end of November 2022
- Attendance and regular performance assessments of the students will be recorded and submitted to provide an update of the youths’ progress.
- Choreographer will be in regular contact and will receive ongoing support from the OLI Resident Choreographer and Senior PM
*Depending on the community, some may need to create 2 dance routines for one community (will be compensated accordingly)
*There is an opportunity to be paired with more than one community if choreographer is available/interested
OLI CAMP (optional)
*Optional for choreographers to attend atleast one day of camp
*May need to choreograph additional closing or opening number sections
*May work with other communities to clean/modify routine if needed
OLI SHOW (mandatory)
- Must be available for 2 Tech days (May 8-9) + 1 Show day (May 10)
- Backstage support if needed by Production Manager
- Lead warmup atleast once and be a morale boost backstage
- Assist with community stage blocking during tech days

IDEAL CANDIDATES
- 3+ years of dance teaching experience
- Very flexible schedule and ready to travel frequently to Indigenous communities from September-June
- Preference over choreographers who reside in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Alberta
- Preference over choreographers with Hip Hop dance background (open to other high energy styles)
- Passionate about Dance and wants to have a long-term career with it
- Warm-energy, approachable, reliable, punctual, organized, coachable, accountable
- Works well with youth, loves to travel, adventurous, easygoing, adapts well to new environments, welcomes new experiences and challenges
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Familiar with policies and best practices for working with youth, volunteers, artists and staff.
- Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy.
- Clear police background check
- Ideal if double-vaccinated (if not, still encouraged to apply)
- Driver’s license is an asset
- Experience working with Indigenous youth or racialized populations is considered an asset
- A First Aid or Mental Health training Certification are considered asset
We are open to:
- Emerging or pre-professional choreographers (0-1 year of experience) with a very flexible and open schedule from September-June.
- Seasoned choreographers that may have limited availability but are highly interested and invested in working with Indigenous communities *We are also building a sublist and an on-call list for one-off workshop opportunities*
